When a friend or relative is grieving the loss of a loved one or the anniversary of a death is drawing near, your kindness can be of great comfort. Recently we heard from an AMM member who received condolences from Fr. Kevin: “I was deeply touched that you remembered my husband and prayed for him, and for me, on the anniversary of his death.  Tuesday, August 15, marks a joyous feast in the liturgical year. Our Lady’s Assumption into heaven was affirmed by the Second Vatican Council in one of its principal documents called Lumen gentium. Its declaration is now part of the Catholic Catechism: “Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be the more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.” (Catholic Catechism, Article 9, Paragraph 6, 966)  

Join with members of the Association of the Miraculous Medal in praying this prayer throughout the month of August and especially during the nine days of the Novena of Masses being held August 6-14, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and on the Solemnity of the Assumption, August 15.  

 You may also burn a Votive Light, confident that the Queen of Heaven will not delay in presenting your special intentions to our sovereign King and Lord of all, Jesus Christ.

As we look toward the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, you are invited to place yourself and your needs in Mary’s loving hands in a very special way. On the September 15 feast day, Vincentians and staff at the Association of the Miraculous Medal in Perryville, Missouri, will celebrate Mass and offer a special remembrance of your intentions. Your shared petitions will be placed into the hands of this statue at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, a sign of your faith-filled appeal to Jesus, presented through Mary. Tuesday, July 18, marks the 193rd anniversary of Our Lady’s first appearance to Sister Catherine Labouré at the chapel in the Daughters of Charity Motherhouse in Paris. On this night, Mary spoke of God’s future mission for the young novice. She also promised that heaven’s graces would be shed upon all who asked for them. We will remember this blessed occasion during that day’s Mass and prayers at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Send your special intentions to be placed near the foot of Our Blessed Mother’s Shrine Altar for remembrance. You may also burn a Votive Light inside the Shrine’s beautiful Votive Light Sanctuary. Finally, this video highlights a statue on the Shrine grounds depicting that moment when Catherine took Mary’s hand in complete trust and devotion. Our Lady is just as near to you. Send your petitions and burn Votive Lights at Our Lady’s National Shrine here in Perryville, Missouri, for the Mother of Divine Grace Novena, beginning July 14. Your petitions will be remembered in our daily Mass and prayers throughout the nine days of the novena and on the feast of the Mother of Divine Grace on July 23. Grace is a free gift from God to man. Our Lady, who is the Mother of Divine Grace, recognizes that we are in need of God’s grace. She reminds us to ask for it. Let Our Blessed Mother intercede for you with her loving Son. I also invite you to say this prayer to Our Lady throughout the nine days of this novena.

The Church observes the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Friday, September 8. On that day, we will begin an octave of prayer at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. You are invited to entrust your intentions to the Mother of God, for Our Lady desires that all souls unite with her Son Jesus. You may also request to burn a Votive Light in Our Lady’s honor.

Please share your prayer intentions for remembrance in our annual Assumption Novena of Masses beginning Sunday, August 6. Throughout the nine days, we will call to mind Our Lady’s Assumption into heaven, declared as official dogma of the Church in 1950 by Pope Pius XII. This year’s August 15 feast day readings highlight Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant, the queen who takes her place at God’s right hand, and one who is blessed because she hears the word of God and observes it.
